PROJECT: [shadow=red,left,300]Retro-Rocket![/shadow] A failed Factory Experimental race car turned Wheel Standing Exhibition racer.
Starting point: One re-issue 'Hurst Hairy Olds' (With Linda Vaughn figure and shifter)
A blast from the past that, dispite it's short comings, builds into a nice curbside replica of the famous dual engine exibition dragster. But that's NOT what I have in mind. Not quite anyway...
Nope, here's more what I have planned...
Don't be shy Linda, step out from back there so the boys can get a good look at you, please...
Thank you.
So, how'd I get to here? Let's have a better look, shall we?
The first thing I did was fill the hole in the hood...
Then I turned to the powerplant, and the kit shortcomings I mentioned...
Shortcomings. The biggest one this kit has would be the worse-than-toy-like headers that are cast directly into the engine/trans combo, making an engine/trans/header cluster****... Horrible, just horrible. (If that's not bad enough, there are two of these near worthless lumps in the kit!)
Since what I really need is the transaxle and nothing else, I cut away, everything else ...
The parts box supplied a big block Chevy that will do for an Olds bottom end in a pinch...
The kit does have a great set of Olds heads and valve covers that will be used. But not the superchargers. I wanted something different from the H/H/H induction and a set of tall stacks seemed just right.
The H/H/H has the engines off set slightly, as I'm guessing the real car did and Torronados as well. I want things more semitrical in my world, so I adjusted that...
That meant the hole in the rear deck needed adjusting too. Since i'm not running the front engine or suspension, I needed something to hang the front wheels on and a straight axle seemed like the thing to do, what with it being a 60's style car and all...
In back, I ditched the pie-crust slicks (Just used them on Frankenbug anyway) in favor of the classic Monogram Goodyears. with a set of slots from the Garbage Truck.
Fatter and tucked better!
Overall underside mock-up...
And just a couple more front and rear 3/4 views...
This should keep me busy till I feel like working on the C.O.W. again...
Thoughts and comments always welcome!
