How many remember these kits from the later 60's? I have always been fascinated with these kits, and of course nowadays they are hard to find, and fairly expensive when you do find one. I have an original SandKat kit that I picked up back in the late eighties for $9.99 (my how prices have soared... ) My point here is.....Can these kits be recreated? After a lot of research on this subject, I have come to the conclusion that they could be, and quite easily. The rear tires might be the hard part, but the paddles will be available again in the Manx kit when it arrives. I also have originals, and the original big vinyl tires too, that can be cast, along with the dual tire adapter. Most of the kits needed are readily available to boot.
The SandKat.....This kit uses the Piranha chassis pretty much as-is with the addition of a flag.
The Sand Hog......This one uses the chassis from the Barris Surf Woody, along with the floor pan, the only things needed is a roll bar, and a scratch built center steering unit, simple stuff right?
The Sand "T" Buggy......Pretty self explanatory here, the AMT '25 T kit (reissued many times in the last 15 years, the newest being the chopped, and Tall T reissues.) Only things needed are the roll bar, and tires. Kinda funny that this is the only one of these in the "275" list!
The Sand Bagger......This one uses the Garlit's Wynns Jammer, Hemisphere, or Hippie Hemi chassis that is modified for the driver to sit in front of the engine. A scratch built roll bar, and steering mechanism, along with a few alterations.
The last one I could find is the Sand Blaster......This one uses a Dragula chassis with a cool looking tall roll bar. This one surprised me as I didn't know they used this one as anything else!!!
I also found this on the net as well, it's the announcement of these kits in the 1967 Auto World catalog (before they figured out the names obviously.... ;D ) So, who wouldn't love to put all these on the shelf in your collection?
