Our race is this friday 3-23-12. here's our car for this year. I did the rough cutout of the body and rough shaping with a dremel. My son jackson did all of the major sanding and finish sanding. he sealed the wood and picked the paint colors (which i sprayed) and he picked out the decals and put them on (the flames are from a cop out kit). The paint is testors aztec gold, with krylon pumpkin orange on the nose, followed by testors wet look clear laquer. I made the "windows" out of some aluminum tape, and the stacks on the hood are stainless steel.

SWEEEEET ! That is sure to stand out at the derby. Let us know how your son makes out . My son and I went to the regionals Saturday. Finished second twice in the first round and got eliminated, but we had a good time. Being St Patricks day, his green car got a lot of nice comments , and a couple of older scouts told him his car looked "cool" -that made his day! !

well, this is car #4 and race # 4 for us since he's been in scouts for 4 years now. he has two first place wins, and one 3rd place finish so far. hoping to get another first this year. there are a lot of little tricks to making these things fast, and they can be done without braking the rules. the looks of the car have nothing to do with how fast it will go. it could be a block of wood for all it matters, but as long as the weight is right at 5.0 ounces, it's placed in the right spot on the car, and the axles and wheels are smoothed, trued and polished perfect...it'll be fast.
