I use MEK for my builds, I normally use Evergreen for my supplies, but had to use Plastruct tubing for some hinges recently. I noticed the bond after drying was very weak.
Is there something in the Plastruct that doesn't work with MEK or is this just a fluke thing?

I don't know what it is but the Plastruct is different,I've had the same problem before.

Moat Plastruct is ABS plastic (like the black sewer waste pipe), although some is styrene. If it's ABS, I've used ABS plumbing glue for fabricating diorama structural columns.

These were white tubes that I assumed was styrene, they were in a rack, not packaged so I can't say for sure it is actually styrene. I've never seen white ABS, just black. Does the color of Plastruct dictate what it's made out of? I've seen white, grey and black.

Hi, can't say what's what chemically, I can say I've been using Plastruct sheet plastic with Plastruct Bondene cement, the bond is great. -Blake

I was wrong, Bondene won't work either. I then noticed the Plastruct tubing is much shinier than Evergreen, so maybe a mold release that is not dissolved by either is the problem. Even sanding the gloss of the tubing doesn't work.

I checked my trusty old Plastruct catalog ( yes a real catalog ! ) in the technical info and found that their tubing is made of either white styrene or gray ABS , but they also make round tubing out of Butyrate which is also white . My guess is you have some of this Butyrate tubing which is not affected by MEK , it requires the use of CA glue . I noticed at Home Depot they sell Lacquer Thinner , Acetone , and MEK , but the MEK has in small print " Substitute " . I bet this safe stuff doesn't work very well either !

Thank you for that info, maybe it was Butyrate. I do know that the MEK did hold the part but the bond was very weak. I also remember the CA failed as did the epoxy I tried. If if was for a static part it might have held, unfortunately this was the perfect size tubing for the brass rod I use for hinges. As for the MEK substitute, I recently read it works well on styrene, but have no personal knowledge of it.

The Plastruct sold by the piece in the rack is not styrene. They sell both ABS and Butyrate in that rack. Plastruct styrene is great...but it is sold package and not a lot of dealers carry it. I deal direct with Plastruct and get great service.
