About two years back, I bought a lot of models on ebay. It was a bit of a long shot. What I received was a big box on models, none of them together at all. Just a giant box of tiny parts. With loads of great stuff in it! I figure most of these models were built in mid 60's. Revell and AMT. I will probably never know by whom, but they did a really nice job, for the most part! I began by sorting through all the pieces of my antique parts lot and deciding what would go with what. And I've just started building them up from there. I had to add a few parts from my own collection to replace broken ones in order to complete them. Mostly though, these are as I found them! Here are a couple that I've gotten together thus far: Much more to come!

Here are some more photos from the lot! Check out this sweet upholstery the unknown builder has done: I started to get this Willys underway: Again, that wicked corduroy upholstery! (you'll also notice it on the pink Ford) This is not complete. There are a number of mistakes I've made on the Willys! There are more from this collection still, I have to take photos. It is unfortunate that I have not done a better job of documenting what has been a fairly long process thus far... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, especially advise on how I could better the above Willys! Meanwhile, this yellow 1954 (?) Ford pick-up is well underway. I should have it all finished up and photographed fairly soon Cheers and happy modelling, Blake,

It's good to see how those beautiful models have been passed on to another generation of owner (so to speak) and are still loved and restored to their glory.
Great work. The best one can do to honor these.

It's great to see you just put these back together as they were!!! Just for the record, the headers on the '32 5/W actually go on the Willys...

I love buying boxes of old Built-Ups! I usually rinse them off with water and put them in the Freezer to break the glue joints. They should come apart pretty easy after a night in the freezer...

Hi All, thank you so much for the wonderful replies You guys are taking the words right out of my mouth: time capsule, treasure chest...passing the hobby down from generations and restoring the Unknown Builders work to it's former glory...this all quite fascinating I find... It's also been a cool challenge to adapt the parts it's been teaching me a bit about scratch building and stuff as new obstacles present themselves. So far I am especially proud of the work I did on the grill and suspension of the pink roadster. I did find a better firewall though, so it might get another upgrade! RatRod: right you are! Those headers are fer the Willys. They look pretty styling on the 32 5/W right now though, so I'd need something for that hemi...suggestions? Headers are a scarce item in my parts box these days... Ira: thanks for the amazing tip. I never would have thought of that in million years, and if I had known that 2 years ago there'd be a lot more parts in my parts box and a lot less in the trash can eshaver: '53 Ford good to know. It is definitely an AMT kit. Stocker/hauler. It's cool that you have one in 1:1 scale. Perfect 1:25 scale reference material! Doesn't happen to be yellow? So here's a small update on the truck: Quite a while back I pilfered the yellow truck's stock Flat-head V8 for use in a project (32 5/w rat rod)I was working on at the time. I dressed it up but kept the original charcoal color:

Nice looking vintage builds ! This site inspired me to restore old kits as well. Seeing what the other guys were doing gave me the "push" to dig in a start rebuilding. You're right you really can learn a lot by scratch building! At last count I've restored nearly 20 .

Hi Don, thanks. 20 wow! I like this whole restoring thing I'm having a lot of fun with it. I like that they are antiques. I'm one of those retro guys, I quess. I'm only 32 so these little cars are older than me. I built models as a kid in the 90's, but I don't think the hobby was a popular as it was in the 60's. I dunno...I like it! So when I got this amazing super lot in the mail I was working on the the reissue AMT 3-1 Deuce Coupe kit. It became the donor kit for the pink roadster, (for the spoke wheels and tires): I built this 32 5/W RAT ROD out of that kit, pilfering the '53 Ford Flat-head (above) from the vintage lot. I've already posted about this build, so this is reposting but it's kinda part of the story: The rat rod was the first build I attempted to install working headlights on, so I did the same to the YELLOW TRUCK. Here are the two together:

NICE LIGHTS! Thanks Ira. So far I have lit up the two cars shown, which by no means makes me an expert but I can share this one tip I've learned: Use of incandescent lights NOT LED's is key. I buy these in the model train section of the hobby store. Not only are they smaller than the smallest led's, but they produce a much more realistic quality of light

So now I have this one more set of photos to share before I sit down and do some real building. Lot has happened in the last year, the wife and I had our first child and moved house. So I'm really only getting the old hobby stuff out now These pictures are just showing some of the others things I scored in 'awesome super lot that got me totally inspired to get back into modelling'. Boxes, nice This old Ford pick up is nice and clean, have almost everything should be a cinch to get together I'll keep you posted: here's a 'mock-up'. Wanna give kudos to the Unknown Builder once more for doing a great job of applying way cool colors! Also got most of the parts i need for a nice T-bucket Ford. When I get to this I'll make a separate thread, methinks: Not even a mock up: I did get some virgin plastic. Here is a Willys Body which I have a few dragster ideas for: And finally one of my (too many) dormant works in a progress which came from the lot. It's a Customized '53 Ford which I've chopped all up and again will a new thread when I finally get back to it! Hope you have enjoyed this little photo essay, feed back is always welcome, cheers and happy modelling! Blake

Great stuff!! I have lots of this 1960 old broken up models!! I restore them whenever I can get ahold of them!! On the Willy's I would remove the hubcaps and leave the rims and put some old racing decals like B&M shifter or STP or some old funky racing flames and ROD BENDER license plates!! Let me know if you have any old busted ones for sale!!

Checking this post again, I really like that unibody Ford truck w/trailer. You can send that one to me if your tired of it laying around the house collecting dust. You don't want that in a new house. The baby will be crawling around soon and eating small parts. It's probably for the best.

I've got to say that this is a very cool thread MiniMag! I've bought several similar lots over the years and it's so cool to see how somebodies body of work survived. Some time about 4 or so years ago my dad mentioned to me that he ran into an old friend of his that asked how the family was doing and what they were up to. My dad mentioned that I was really into models and that I'm always looking for them. His friend says have him call me and stop by. So my dad and I headed over to his place where a collection of vintage 50s/60s builds, parts, and boxes sat on his dining room table for me to check out. Turns out that it was he and his brother's from when they were young. Anyway, they were some of the nicest 3-in-1 survivor kits I had seen and a bunch of parts. We agreed on a price, I thanked him, and brought them home. It's one of my most cherished collections although I've had them packaged up ever since. I'm waiting for the time when I can display it the way it deserves. Anyway, these collections are some of the coolest things to see brought back as opposed to stripped and restored to something they were not even if it is a better build.
I've been checking your pics over and over and there are some really inspiring builds in there. That orange and black custom is freakin cool. Usually when somebody used something to simulate upholstery back then it left a lot to be desired but for some reason that one looks really good. I'm digging it. Very cool stuff and I'll be looking forward to checking back again in hopes that you show more of them as you get them done. Maybe this winter I'll pull out my collection and snap some pics to show it as I received it.

Maybe this winter I'll pull out my collection and snap some pics to show it as I received it. Hi A.J., thanks for checking it out!Glad you like it. Yeah, when I opened this box I pretty quickly realized that these particular builds were too beautiful for me to go dousing them in paint stripper I thought to do so would be a travesty of sorts One thing I want to point out is the chrome plated pieces. I like that they are weathered by 50 odd years time. It doesn't really look like real 1:1 scale weathering, nor does it look like any weathering technique I have seen. It's its own thing and I think it's neat. Lately since I posted this thread, I got back to work on the 53 Ford F-100, the last picture I posted. I promoted from 'dormant WIP' to 'active WIP It came untouched, so it's a different thing and I made a new thread for it. Here's the link: coffincorner.proboards.com/thread/18613/ford-100-custom-pickup-wip?page=1&scrollTo=170063Probably when this gets to the 'waiting for paint cure' stage I'll get back to finishing up some of the other subjects shown here. Cheers and happy modelling, 'MiniMag'

...and that's still not all. Now that a little more unpacking/workshop setting up has been done, I've gotten a round to snapping some shots of the last few: This Willys pick-up does have the front end, I promise: So that's about it! There is still a big box of parts...bumpers and grills and all this stuff. A lot of botched wheels, unfortunately for all the good qualities the Unknown Builder had, like painting and upholstering, wheels were NOT this persons forte. Still I've managed to save a lot of tires. Seems like they the new kit tires aren't as nice as the old ones! I plan to get to most of these one by one, I'll keep posting as I do. Mind you, it's been two years already, but modelling isn't meant to be rushed too much, in my opinion. So yeah, won't happen over night but I'm decided to get these beauties on the shelf! Feedback is always welcome, Cheers
