San Francisco Verses the Flying Saucers! Members of our San Francisco SciFi Club are all building Ray Harryhausen Tribute Models for our 11th Year Anniversary Meeting Next Month! This my version of a scene, that might have happened, from the Ray Harryhausen Movie Earth Verses the Flying Saucers. I started with parts from the Pegasus Models Alpha Centari UFOs Kit, a 1970's IHC Victorian House, a Ferrari 250 GT, sheet plastic, a Laser Beam and Glowing and Flashing-Color Changing Lights. ONE SAUCER PLEASE!I found an old Tupperware bowl that was the Perfect Shape for the Top-Outside section of the Flying Saucer. I scribed a circle on the bottom of the Tupperware with the X-acto Knife-Compass. I cut along that line with a Cut-Off Wheel in a Dremel Tool. Here is the Cut-Out Section of Tupperware after Sanding and Leveling the bottom. The Top of the Pegasus UFO fits Perfectly on the Ridge on the Tupperware bottom. More Coming...

SLICING A TOP!I found the perfect shape for a Flying Saucer Top in a Gumball Machine. This is one of those containers with toys in them, that you can find in Vending Machines. I put a strip of 1/8th inch wide tape around the blue piece as shown. Then I drew a line along the edge of the tape and removed the tape. Next I cut off the top with a Cut-Off Wheel. More Coming...

FITTING THE TOP!I traced the shape of the Top on to Sheet Plastic and cut the circle out. After Sanding and Leveling I joined the Circle of Plastic and the Top with Zap-A-Gap, Green Label Glue. I cut out a smaller Circle of Plastic and glued it in the center of the Tops bottom. Here is the Top being Test Fit... More Coming...

BIGGER BOTTOM!The Bottom Section of the UFO needs a Larger Outer Ring. I cut one out of sheet plastic with the X-Acto Trimming Compass. I decided to cut holes in the centers of the Top & Bottom Sections. The Dremel Tool with a Cut-Off Wheel made the job Quick & Easy! This will give me access for adding Lights & Magnets later. The Bottom Section of the Saucer had a Raised Rim in the center. I removed it with an X-Acto Knife and Sandpaper. More Coming...

SLOTS!The Bottom Section of the Saucer needs some Slots, like the ones in the Movie! I measured and marked the Slot Positions all the way around. I started Scribing with a Needle Sharp Point, gentle at first until I got a good lines in. Then I switched to a wider Scribe and went over the lines several times more. I used the end of a file to make the Slot a little Wider. More Coming...

BOTTOM-CENTER!I found that the Top to the Costco Salt Shaker was the perfect diameter for the Bottom-Center Section of the Saucer. I held the pencil and turned the Top to make a cut line... I cut the excess off with a Cut-Off Wheel. I sprayed a little Primer on the Top and after it dried I found center on the Top. Then I scribed a Circle for the "Elevator". The Laser Cannon will be located in the Center... More Coming...

PAINTING THE HOUSE!This is a Great kit. The Plastic is molded into 4 different colors plus clear. I painted the house with my own flat colors, then added washes and sprayed with Dullcoat. The Roof was sprayed with Grey Primer, then I brushed on The Detailer-Black. Some Dullcoat was then sprayed on the Roof. I replaced most of the plastic kit windows with thin clear plastic sheet. I did use the kits Bay Windows. Four different styles of Curtains came with the House. I cut open some of the Curtains so we can see inside. Then I taped them inside of the Windows. Here is what it looks like after the Windows and Curtains have been added. More Coming...

THE BIG BASE!This Base and another Flat Base came with Plastic Display Cases for 25th scale cars. This is the extra Base, I'm using it for the House. I fit the House Kit's Base on this one and Cut-Out an access hole. Here is the Grey House Base glued in place on the Big Base. I cut-out Sheet Plastic to bring the Black Base height up to the House Base, so they are level & flat. Then I sprayed some Grey Filler-Primer over the Base. I needed this larger Base because I will be fitting the switch and batteries inside. More Coming...

That's a Neat Project Ira, You have a Great Imagination for building. -I like that "Homes of Yesterday" -kit too, that must be like a diorama? -- ?is the kit itself, to look just like the box cover? looks interesting for sure. ---Looking forward to see how this turns out! -Nice Work, So Far. ---AL -btw, .... I once had a '70 Charger that always reminded me of a Flying Saucer ............. He-He-He Thanks Al!
There is only one Victorian House in each kit...

ON BASE!Before gluing the House together I taped some Tan colored paper behind the open curtains. This gives the illusion of an interior wall seen through the window. Here are the 4 walls glued in place on the New Base! This House will be going through a lot of Stress, so I am adding interior bracing to keep it together. The Big Round Tube added quite a bit of strength to the structure. More Coming...

CONCRETE WORK!I am going to add a Patio in the back yard, define the Driveway Lines and add some Sidewalk Detail. I started by measuring and drawing the lines for the Patio. Next I started Scribing the lines. The first line defined the little Grass area between the Driveway and the Stairs. Here is the same area after all the Lines have been Scribed. Here are the new Patio Lines! More Coming...

A LITTLE DIRT & GRASS!I found a bag of HO Scale Grass at our New Hobby Shop, Fundemonium Hobbies! The Grass is very realistic, it can be applied to the model with paint or glue. It's kind of like, working with flocking. Here you can see it pretty good. Instead of just one color it comes with several all in the mix! I also got a bag of Dirt at our New Hobby Shop! I drilled holes for Trees to be added later. Then I painted a Brown Circle around each hole and sprinkled Dirt over the paint. More Coming...

LASER LIGHT!The Laser Beam will be a Big part of the Diorama. I am using parts from a Dollar Store Flashlight for the Laser Light. I will be using the Lights and the Battery Holder from the Flashlight. I found an old Switch from a RC Radio. Later, I cut off the Plug and RC Battery Holder. Perfect for the Laser Beam! After doing a lot of testing, I figured out how to solder the switch between the Lights and Battery. It Works! More Coming...

LASER BEAM!The Laser Beam actually supports the Saucer. I found plastic tubes and shapes at Tap Plastic, Dollar Store, Hobby Shop and Plastic Champaign Glasses at the Department Store. Maybe Cigar tubes? Look around you will find some Great Shapes! I ended up using a Clear Tube and will Tint the Lens later. Here is what happens when you shine a light in the Tube! I cut a hole in the roof to fit the Laser Tube. I think the roof might need a little bracing to support the Saucer... More Coming...

THE RAY GUN!...Part 1I need to build this Ray Gun Strong enough to support the Flying Saucer. I started with the end of a Retractable Ball Point Pen and a Plastic Part that looks like a Satellite Dish. I used a Plastruc part but you could probably find a button that would work. Next I needed a piece of plastic strip. I rounded off the end with a Foam Sanding Board. Then I filed a groove wide enough to hold the Plastic Strip. More Coming...
