Made some time on the Double Bath... I combined an Eldon bathtub rod with the chassis from the AMT Double Dragster... of course I can't do anything normal so I swapped the small blocks out for the Hemi that comes in the kit, which meant I had to use both of my Double Dragster kits for the hemis.. I'm in the painting stages right now, but I may go back and shorten the chassis just a bit. I'm going to flock the cushions, also.

After looking at it, I decided to rip it apart for revisions.. if it's not right, it's not right... I've decided to shorten the frame under the engine to tighten up the gap and after adding the early-style Hemis I wanted a more early '60s wheel and tire combo... Though the Cragars came in in 1964, they would almost be a little too new for the rest of the stuff. I decided to use some old-style Firestone slicks and dirt rib fronts... the brass-plated Cragars will match the bits of plumbing. I felt that the super-wide rear slicks and dragster wheels were "almost right"... I'll see how this sits for now, I'll probably swap the tires around again. Anything can happen.

After eyeballing the wheels, I decided that the fronts needed to be narrowed. The offset was bothering the crap out of me. I was a bit apprehensive, as these things are older than I am, and gold plated... replacing them if I messed up would be a task. But... I slowly ran the razor saw around the bottom of the outer lip and cut it off. I then whittled and ground down the outer hoop to the inner step, being careful not to scratch or cut the center cap or get into the spokes. When that was even, I glued the outer hoop back on, and placed it in the tire to center everything up. In scale it's probably a two or three-inch reduction in width, but they sit inside the tires more naturally. It's one of those things nobody will notice, but it won't stick out as being wrong, either. You can see the difference.... I also took a bit out of the wheelbase under the engine and spliced it back together:

This is why models never get finished. While digging through all my bathtub and gold plated parts I decided to throw this mock up together...

After putting it off for a while, I finally got around to flocking the cushions. I mixed up some green paint from my son's water-based paint that came in one of his old kits. I then sifted the flocking into a nice, fluffy pile and applied it to the freshly painted surfaces. After it dried I tapped the parts and used a dry brush to remove the excess. I did wear my respirator, as those little fibers can clog your lungs and stop the transfer of oxygen. Trust me, they went everywhere...

I hate flocking, but it does look nice. Nice work Brandon. It's good to see that you are sniffing a little glue.

Neat! I actually like the original tires better. The wider slicks go better with the double wide tubs.
What's the white chassis under the single tub from? That ones pretty cool looking, and I like the sink as the "turtle deck."

Neat! I actually like the original tires better. The wider slicks go better with the double wide tubs. What's the white chassis under the single tub from? That ones pretty cool looking, and I like the sink as the "turtle deck." Brian I was wrestling with that myself...The Firestones were too skinny, but the gold Cragars were a bit on the small size and didn't look right in the wider slicks... so I dipped into my Paddy Wagon kit and robbed two of the rear wheels for the outer hoops. I cut the axle/center cap area off with my razor saw and sanded down the rest until I had it the width I wanted. I then sanded down the face of the cragars, being careful not to get into the center cap, and trimmed the outer flange down so it would slip inside the slick... Much better. The white frame is from the AMT Double Dragster. The front axle is from the Barris Bathtub Buggy, and the rear from a Paddy Wagon. You can see the difference in the widths.. it really made a huge improvement. Ohhhhh.... getting close now!

Cool! Great solution on the rear wheels and tires! That green flocking looks suitably groovy.

While the Double Bath is drying in final assembly, I made some time on the Tub Rod.. I trimmed some of the "flooring" of the chassis back to the axle and found some suitable coil springs to mount the rear axle. It kind of has an early spring car feel to it with the wide axles and narrow body. I dig it. Since the bathtub and sink came painted and decaled, I am going to leave them as found. This was a glue bomb that's probably older than I am. After looking at photos of Riesner's double tub rod, I was inspired by the upholstered chassis, and have decided to flock this one's chassis in a magenta red to match the decals. I think it will make it pop and tie everything together...

Well, I did one last mockup before heading forward. I sorted out the mounting points for the suspension pieces and things like that. The engine tab is now trimmed flush. I use longer pieces during construction whenever I can for positioning and then trim them down to fit. It's a little easier than handling tiny tabs. The windshield is just sitting on there, also. It will be raked back a little more. of course the next step is to flock the chassis...

Last progress shot on this one. I'm in final assembly and paint detailing. I have the chassis flocked and assembled... I'm glad to finally use up all those gold parts I had banging around the boneyard... it's neat when "one day" finally comes.
