Not a showrod but I have always wanted to build a replica of my first car.
The year was 1973. And I was getting my first car. Like so many "first's" in a young man's life, the car is truly his "first" love.
I saw a 1957 Chevy 2-door , no rust, in the local paper. I checked it out and it belonged to an elderly lady who could no longer drive. A match made in Heaven right? Well when my Dad went to look at with me, she wanted $300. My Dad said no that it would be requiring a lot of maintenance and said I need a more reliable and newer auto. I begged but the answer was NO. Since he would be paying for it and I would pay him back through jobs. So the search continued, and then I came across "her". A beautiful Metallic Gold 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T. I knew the "R/T" stood for "Road & Track" and to me that screamed ""speed".
A 440/350 HP V8 Engine 2bbl engine and Mopar's famous TorqueFlite transmission, No air conditioning but a standard cigarette lighter. I did have to add a chrome extension for the tail pipe and of course a Pioneer 8-track player with map light(yeah that was a big deal LOL) At first he though not because of the power, but all the cars then had power and this was in such perfect condition, he knew it was a good buy at $800.(1967 MSRP was $3,199). My Dad taught me everything about cars with that one. How an engine works, changing plugs, points, oil and filters and keeping good maintenance. Skills that I would carry throughout life. I never did much more with my Dad for he died very young of a major heart attack. I would drive us to fishing and hunting trips in that car and had discovered teenage "life" in that car so it truly was, Special to me.
