Summer is close enough. Time to work on a dune buggy. Thought I'd work up this Surf Buggy I got a while back: Seems when some of these 1:20 kits were engineered, somebody thought they should be "quick builds" Okay by me. I did opt to cut some of the molded in wood panels from the woodie enclosure. Gives it a bit of a beach breeze flow thru. Hate the tires. May replace them with some 4x4s, unless I can find a suitable front wheel swap-out. Classy instruction art Is that a hat or road cone?
Thanks for lookin"!

I'd never seen one of these either - looks cool! Keep us posted - have you picked a color yet?

Metal flake orange or bright purple, maybe. Whatever I go with, it'll need to work with the wood paneling. Maybe I'll work the enclosure up first, then stare at it for a while...

Yes nice one, I changed my fronts as they were too big for Meyers Manx wheels and tyres, cut out the rear panels and put clear plastic in... And a few home printed decals

Both excellent builds, and both were inspiration for me to cut out some of the panels. I like the street look Paul got from using two sets of front tires from the kit, but, I only have one

It's a pity they made it 1/20 in a way - or the AMT Super Bug chassis and engine would probably fit under there pretty well. Still a cool kit though, I'd build one!

I always liked the wheels and tires in this kit , good for parts swapping .

I always liked the wheels and tires in this kit , good for parts swapping . Hate was too strong a word... I should know better. Those front wheels would definitely make awesome rears on some other kit. I just felt the wheel combination could have been better thought out.
Lucky for me, the fronts on a set of 1/20 McLaren tires from a recent purchase were a better fit. And the wheel openings were the same size as the originals. Left to right, the original rear tires; center, the McLaren fronts: right back, a McLaren rear tire; right front, a kit front tire.
I think they struck a better balance:
And I did some paintwork on the wood and roof. You can tell by the stains in the interior that the body has already hit the pond once.

This is going well plastimatic! Looking forward to the rest of the build. I normally get the paint stains on my fingers!

And... the initial results of said experiment:
After all, it is the "Psychedelic Surf Buggy"
This was my first time trying a hydro-dip.
Simple enough, using only Testors enamels in black/orange/teal/red. At first, I thought it was a little too intricate, but then I figured, at 1:1 size, it'd be just about right.
I'll still need to do some top coating to even out the finish (and maybe a pearl coat for sparkle).
The board is already in the pond, tho. Thought it looked a little heavy handed.
And there's at least one more thing I want to try out.

Dude, that looks AWESOME! Really cool! And like you say, a little clear over there and it'll look amazing!
Be careful to use an acrylic clear if it's going over enamels - it'd be a shame to see that paint job ruined

I reworked the board with a base of white primer, followed by a double dip of white/orange/teal:
