The Amazing Moon Mixer restoration

This kit was a huge grail for me - The Amazing Moon Mixer ! Never mind how an air cooled carbureted engine can run on the Moon with no air ! Todd challenged me to rebuild this on his site and I jumped at the chance - The first and hardest part was getting it apart ; old Revell plastic is more brittle than eggshells , and many pieces broke .Some parts wouldn't come apart anymore and I had to work around them. Once it was as apart as it would come and the paint stripped off ,it was time to dig in - literally. Lots of glue had to be cut or ground out .The steering was repaired by drilling the spindles (which broke a few times) and using a Christmas ornament hanger as the center link . The steering wheel rim was long gone so I gutted the center out of a steering wheel from the parts bin . I found that by slowly building it in sections or even gluing one or two parts a night made for a more solid platform to work with. The thrusters on the mixer are the same ones used on the Revell moon landing kit and luckily I still had the remains of my old one to use. I did have a few of the missing bits donated, on the condition that I finish this kit. Paint is Testors One Coat Lacquer Firey Orange over a silver base. Hot Wheels Bob once again came through for me on some excellent repro decals. He really outdid himself and they really make the kit stand out. Thanks again Todd for the Lazarus challenge, It was a blast !!!

Thanks ! I went with the orange because I always liked the way the box art looked. I wish the molds for this series were still around ; these are neat little kits !

Great work!! How did you do the gold pin stripe??? I think the tooling is still around but the tire tool is missing and nothing else fits. Wonder if Atlantis has the tool??

For the pinstripes I used one of those Testors paint pens . I have one that is nearly empty so the paint doesn't' drip out . It took a while, but it came out better than if I tried it with a brush !
The tires I believe are the same for the Henry J and all the gasser kits they made ; If possible Atlantis should reissue them , They rarely pop up on Ebay and even the junky ones don't go cheap anymore , and the new plastic wont be as brittle as the stuff Revell used.

Oh yes, the Meter Cheater ! That and the Guber wagon are the two in this series that I'd like to find and redo ; unless they somehow get reissued...

Great job!...Did this a while ago. Just re-glued the axle on Saturday as things get broken when they are fragile from wide wheels

Always love seeing a kit restored. Very nice job on this one! I restored a Dragon Wagon glue bomb I bought about 6 months before they re-released it so I know how tough a job that can be. Love the color. Did you do the silver trim on the fenders with a sharpie?

I did the silver trim with an old Pactra paint pen. it was nearly empty so I was able to run the tip on the edges without the risk of fresh silver paint pouring out of the pen.

Very nice job on the restoration. Having restored a glue/paint bomb myself I know how much work it is. Looks great. I actually have a partially assembled one of these myself. Will have to try to get to work on it.
