I have been thinking and thinking about what to do with Rommels Rod for several years and after mentally going thru many variations including a bubbletop version and a pickup truck version, I finally came up with an idea I can live with. Rommels Roadster I cut off the rear part, behind the front seats and I thought it needed a short rear end to show off the long sweeping front fenders. After testing several rear ends I decided that the 1955 Porsche Speedster rear would work. My runner-up was using the front of a VW and changing the headlights but there would have been way too much bodywork to make that fit correctly on the rear of the RR. I cut it off the Speedster rear and notched it to fit onto the Rommels Rod. Then after studying it I thought it needed built-in headrests, so I dug up the seats from the Red Baron and sculpted to fit, putty will make it smooth. This is just a vague mock-up as I’m not sure of the tires and wheels as well as the stance but at least I can get a general idea of the look. I’m still up in the air on if I should use the front hood. I may alter it to look better, although its not in the pictures. I will be filling in the spare tire well and the exhaust ports. I’m still not sure of the engine choice yet. Its still a bit sloppy looking buy I will get it tightened up. Thanks for looking and I hope you like it.

Looks promising! I think the hood should slope downward at the front, myself.

Looks like a 1950's LeMans special! Reminds me of Ol' Yeller. Needs a unique powerplant, for sure. I don't know of one in model from but the first thing I thought of was a Jaguar in-line 12. Working on a box-stock Rommel's Rod myself.

Or something really strange: An inline 9, perhaps, or a V-7.

Does this give you any ideas? Maybe a chain drive?

lots of choices here.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
I'm looking at a 10 cylinder Viper engine, hopefully it will look good.

Thanks again for all your kind and helpful comments.
I have the chassis almost complete from scratch. I will post pics after I take some. I thought I could use the seats from the Red Baron but I just can't make them fit and look right.....moving on to scratch built the interior and find seats.
I have decided on the Viper 12 cylinder for the powerplant. The exhaust manifolds are molded in so I had to grind them off. It's never easy going when you're Frankensteining a build, but man I love to Frankenstein!!!

I scratch built the chassis and primed it in flat black. I used the rear end and suspension and the front suspension from the Viper as it seemed to fit without too much altering. I think there are still a few issues that need to be addressed. I'm also working on the wheels, interior and engine. Then there is a huge amount of bodywork to do. I still need to think about a body color. Thanks again for looking. Dave

For me the wheel choice would be hard. Paul I'd probably go with "round"! I guess I'm a traditionalist! Brian

Thanks for the nice comments.
I'm pretty old school so I'll likely go with round tires. These new fangled triangle tires are for the young drivers, too high tech for me.

Hand building the interior door panels. I made the speakers, door handles and used Evergreen half-round to make the panels. The seats aren't lined up but they will be. I found the dashboard in my interior parts box. Thanks again for looking and I hope you like it. Dave

The interior is looking excellent! The dash really goes along with the style of the build.
