It's been a very long time since I've built a Show Rod and even longer since I built a Tom Daniel Show Rod , so I decided to grab one out of my stash and give it a shot !
The last time I built a Red Baron was back in 1968 , I was 12-13 years old and gotta say it came out pretty nice ! It was such an easy kit to put together and without any paint I was hooked on the TD kits .
This time around it will still be pretty much out of the box with just a couple personal touches . The first is to replace the front axle with some parts from one of the Revell Street T kits , this gives it working steering plus all the pieces are chrome .
To do this I removed the stock axle and shortened the frame to adjust for the addition of the spring . The front of the frame also had to be "thinned" quite a bit to allow the tie-rod to clear the underside . The rear of the spring is slotted so I added a small piece in the center of the frame to serve as a mount , then I made a new mounting bracket from rectangular rod . The chrome will be touched up later with Molotow .
You probably noticed the helmet's chrome has been stripped , that's to add some detail so it looks somewhat like a WWI German helmet .
The bottom edge was extended to from sort of a skirt and other details were added with .020" sheet .
Here's the look I'm going for . The plan is black paint with all of the details foiled , then an "Eagle" decal for the front and "German Cross" decals on the sides . Also some small rivets will be added along the skirt .
The only other change I'm making is to swap out the kit tires for something nicer but maintaining the original appearance . This took a lot of digging because the Red Baron's wheels are slightly undersized and don't really fit other tires . I ended up with some AMT Polyglas GT's for the front and some nice rears from an AMT '67 Chevelle Pro Street kit , the fronts almost fit and with a little shimming they work okay . Good Year decals on the rear are from Fireball Modelworks .
That's all for now . To be continued . . .
