Hi everyone, A local model club sent this in their newsletter and I thought I'd share it with you. They claim to have a new approach to contest(s) and appears to have nothing to do with the GSL of Mark Gustavsen fane. It's to be held on 6/22 in Salt Lake City (South Jordan) at an Army National Guard site. I believe it to be more geared for military models than wild custom show rods but feel free to look for yourselves. rockymtnhobbyexpo.com/Hizoot

Not having ever participated in a modeling contest, I did not know there was a "problem" with judged shows--but at the same time, I'm not surprised there is. Any time you have ANY type of subjective judgment, there will be controversy. After reading through their approach, it seems like a better way. Any time one can reduce or eliminate drama and broaden the experience, it's probably a good thing. I'm going to attend the IPMS Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin, on July 19: nats2024.com/

I attended the IPMS National show a long time ago when it was in Anaheim California. The national judging committee deferred all civilian automotive judging to the local chapter due to the fact that they didn't know enough about automotive judging to be qualified... A bold move on their part to incorporate that, even more recently the local IMPS chapter did the same with our local area club for the same basic reason. IMHO automotive judging is better served with the judges knowing subject matter, so this helps. But when it comes to customs, there's no real rules or guidelines other than it must be altered from "stock or factory condition." Craftsmanship and design will play a big part but who's to say from what standard(s) or origin that is? This is why GSL only chose customs with minimal alterations and rejected original designs. While I like the idea of a pre-judged display, I don't want military builders critiquing my original custom creations, so I doubt I'll attend but at least they provided that information ahead of time to avoid stress or drama. Good for them! Hizoot,
