Okay, besides my obvious lack of extra money to spend on one, I recently visited Sam's shop where he was trying to make a Boyd-built custom somewhat less of a rolling death-trap. This PT Cruiser was built in Boyd's shop for the SEMA show back in 2001 or 2002. This car was reportedly purchased for $100,000.00 soon thereafter by Brian Setzer, who I am guessing hadn't tried to drive the thing first. Sam had already replaced the front struts when I got there, and the stock strut cartridges he removed (with only 7,000 miles on the odometer) were completely shot. I'm guessing if we disassembled them further, we'd find someone had drilled a small hole to release the nitrogen and oil from them to lower the car that extra 3/4". Any bump at freeway speed sent the car all over the place - the new KYB GR2's should make it much more controlable. The rear trailing arms had had sections removed and plates installed on the back side (with unfinished welds) to allow clearance for the 18" alloys with 255/45R18 tires. I know stance is important, but 1/2" less backspacing and 245mm wide casings would have avoided having to cluge these assemblies together. They went to all that trouble to clearance the trailing arms, but just allowed the tires to rub on the plastic inner fender liners in the rear until they clearanced themselves. The areas they cut away were for the gas filler that they re-routed to the INTERIOR of the car when they shaved the exterior gas filler door. The routing of the new filler hose makes it so that it is easily damaged or dislodged just through the act of inserting a gas pump nozzle and filling the tank. They also seem to have deleted the vent tube, so the filler is more likely to burp (into the carpeted/upholstered interior cargo area of this little panel delivery). Also, note the unfinished edge on the access for the filler - eww! Fit and finish issues included duct tape (!) peeking from under the interior panel on the rear hatch and mis-aligned door and hood panel gaps. I'm sure Sam can fill you in on even more of the ugly details.

.. it figures. Considering the deplorable time constraints and the apparantly god-awful shop attitude that the show unveiled, it's a wonder that Boyd's still able to play on his name. It's sad, really. But it IS a nice looking Cruiser. Be nicer looking if the Coddington signature were removed.

Sounds like what it really needs is a rwd frame!
That'd be an interesting concept, design-theory-wise, sort of de-faking. Call it shaving quotation marks: begin with a "fat-fendered rod" and end up with a fat-fendered rod.

I wouldn't BUY ANTYHING from Boyds, like stated above the shop IS A JOKE with all the atitudes and bigheaded people working there, I an VERY SURPRISED that he can still sell any cars if they come out like this one.REALLY SAD, but I do like the idea of removing his name from it, it would look ALOT BETTER without it,....................Chief

After watching that show, I don't know why anyone in thier right mind would buy something from that shop. Can you say CLUSTER F***? It's a shame, becasue some nice stuff has come out of there idea-wise, but if it all fits and looks like that, forget it. Some guys got it, some don't. I think Troy Trepeneer is one of the best builders out there, and it all works and fits properly too.

My Suggestion Is To Crate That Little Sucker Up & Ship It out, To One Of The Fine Armed Services Target Ranges, Or Maybe One Of the Worlds Hot Spots ....Let Them Have there way with it .............That'll Fix ALL The Problems , And remove that Unsightly Blemish From the rear Windows !!! ........Put it out of it's Misery..It's The Right Thing To Do .....

I do like the 2 door sedan delivery look on it
I don't care for the Boyd look usually.. And the show is too annoying with all the adlib drama.
I'm hoping all the safety neglegence on this thing was due to a tight schedule to dolly up a PT for the SEMA show. But $100k.. I'd have to see the bill of sale to believe it. Setzers no dummy when it comes to cars.
First thing I'd do is scape that Boyd fodder off the sides.

After seeing a couple episodes, that's why I stopped watching. I've had to deal with enough real-life work attitudes like that where even seeing it on TV spoils everything for me, no matter what's being worked on.

Wow! I can't believe Boyd Coddington would put his name on a butcher job piece of poop like that! Actually that kind of work can kill your business quick not only "word of mouth" how about "word of PC" with digital shots to boot! That's a good place for it the left coast they wouldn't have to worry about it here in Pennsylvania cause it wouldn't pass the state inspection one look at the half a$$ed rear lower control arms and it would flunk let alone the safety of the moved gas filler neck etc. Inspection shops would have a field day with that turd!

I would guess the PT was sold 'as-is, where-is' with no warrranty. Modifying or cutting suspension parts or fuel system parts is probably a violation of a few federal laws, unless it is strictly a show car. That is not acceptable on a driver. Very shoddy. Good thing your friend knows how to correct the problems. What if 'Joe Public' bought it and drove it down the highway? A giant oops?
Now, on my PT, the 1/25th snap kit, I added a chassis from a 53 Corvette as the wheelsbase is the same; I have a real Hemi going in it from the Revell Dodge Daytona; the nose is hinged, as it should be on the 1:1 car; I am working on an interior, the biggest challenge. Now, if I screw up, it's still easier to fix than that big PT.
I think the side panels need a nice showrod mural over that chicken-scratched name.

ok, first off i mny opinon, boyd is a jerk (i met him a few years ago at a good guys show. second off, these guys are butchers...hands down. sure, look at the paint, and the wheels...they look great. but the real story is told, once you lift the canvas off. i'd rather have a ratty looking thing that's safe, than a sharp looking death trap. the fit & finish on this thing is terrible...and that's just judging by the pics. imagine what it looks like up close. if setzer paid $100,000.00 for this pile of crap, i'll sell him a killer 55 pontiac for half that price.

Well, part of it is that it was a car built for SEMA. Those are not Detroit Speed and Engineering masterpieces, they are hastily thrown together to look pretty on the display floor. I'm really not surprised...

I'm really not surprised... That's all well and good if it's for display but getting all that money off someone who could quite possibly be seriously injured seems ridiculous. for that kind of money it should be at least roadworthy!
