Well, it's been an exciting last week or so with the discovery of Steve Scott, so I thought I'd add a bit more to the group with some Richard Carroll! LOL. As some of you know, I managed to track down Richard about a year and a half ago, and he's one hell of a nice guy! No, he doesn't have a warehouse filled with boxes of the original tires, I asked! LOL. At the time I last talked with him, he really wasn't overly internet savvy, but had just gotten a new digital camera and was getting the hang of it. I thought that now might be a good time to recontact him, and see if he would grant us audience, maybe answer some questions, and possibly take some photos of his contest winning models. (He still has them all) He was as burnt on the model contest scene as Steve was on the 1:1 car scene. He got bored and quit. Obviously for this time period, there was a huge lack of competition for him. His models were so far ahead of thier time it was ridiculous! I also figured that since Joe had cast all of those tires, I'd send him a set along with one of the original packages I have stashed away. I think he'd be floored at the amount of those tires Joe made! (what was it Joe, somewhere between 75-100 SETS?!) I think it would also be obvious the interest was still there in his models, especailly with this group who excels in kitbashing and one-off's so well! I'm not going to call him, but will send him a card and the tires and wait to see what happens!! wish me luck!

I never thought about D*ck being somebody's name.... I can undo the censorship if everyone promises not to call anyone a dick....

Tim, If you get back with Richard you might bring up the model car museum in Salt Lake. Mark has a number of 'famous' models in the museums care and I think Richards belong there as much as anyone. Would love to see one there!!!

Thats a sore spot with me Dave. That model I got hold of from one of the original Revell contests, which I gave the original owner 100 bucks for, restored it completely, sent it with it's original case, plaque, and ribbon to Gustavson for the museum. First off, I had to contact Mark 4 months after I sent it just to see if he had even recieved it which really p'd me off, especailly since I had asked him to please contact me ASAP to let me know he got it safely. Mark had promised to send the builder, Gabe, and myself a free membership to the museum newsletter as well. Nothin'. (not that I give a flyin' crap) I had to actually post my note to Mark on the HH site just to get his attention. I had tried today to get to the museum website, which won't load any longer and I cannot find an alternate site, so I'm guessing is dead. This whole deal left a bad taste in my mouth concerning the museum. In the future, I'd like to see someplace like the Peterson Museum add an area for classic models, maybe a Tom Daniel tribute area, Richard Carroll, etc. Richard told me they had been after some of his models, but I think if he is smart he will leave them in the Tupperware until such a place is created to insure future builders may enjoy them in a quality museum where they can be viewed on a daily basis in a secure environment. Sorry for the rant, I don't usually do this, but I was really let down over the whole situation.

I understand the frustration Tim.....but I hope that was just one bad deal...the Museum and site are still around. In fact Mark just organized the donation of a BUNCH of models for our guys and gals in Iraq and he and the folks on HH/BB will be sending more. Mark is a lawyer and 100% of his time needed to run the museum is donated free. Mark is a busy but good guy....
On a established Museum making room for 'toys' I would not hold my breath. NASCAR is putting their 'Hall of Fame' in Charlotte and some of the NASCAR model guys have asked about having a model display and gotten a cold response. Peterson might be better but I don't see even them giving proper care and display to our models....
I would hate to see what happened to many of the great models happen to Richard's...thrown out when the person passes on.

What about Starbird's place! ! ! I know Elden and Jerry Titus are good friends with him. . . and who wouldn't want models in your place . . . it is just another draw. . .and these would be with 1:1 showrods. . . . it would be a prefect fit!

of course he puts all his time for free. what other way would you be able to get your own model museum with only a small investment. He gets everybody to send him all this priceless stuff and all he has to do is offer a membership .

I think the best we might hope for from Petersen would be a temporary "Featured Exhibit" like their current Hot Wheels Hall of Fame exhibit.

I know Darryl has some models in his museum as he took two of mine when he was in Toronto a couple of years ago. I have seen a photo of a model display shelf in his office where he keeps some of his original Monogram cars from the 60's. These are what Darryl took. The orange one is a stock Ultra Truck (Monogram changed the name for the kit), polished plastic and BMF trim. The yellow one is modified; tow boom from the parts box, 4 snow tires, cut down windscreen from a mid 60's custom Corvette; well, Darryl might need a tow truck some time, eh! I gave up on the museum a few years ago. I offered to rebuild one of the cars needing restoration and it fell on deaf ears. I guess I'm not good enough.
My wife (who was a medical transcriptionist 15 years ago) offered to transcribe an interview Mark had reached out to the HHMB for.
Though she was 'named' as the scribe, nothing ever came. Instead, some story about mail being returned as undeliverable. ..whatever that is about, I don't know, but only Mark has problems sending mail to me. Ask my wife, she's ready to shoot the postman some days with all these ebay boxes.
I summize then (don't want to pee the lawyer off) that like Model Cars Magazine, Mark must be running the museum as a one man show. Thats too bad if true, because that means when he dies (we all will someday) the museum will most likely fold up.
Thats a sore spot with me Dave.
