When I was a kid of 9 years old, my good buddy, Lumpy Canepa and I, built models together down in his basement in El Cerrito, California, across the bay from San Fransisco. It was an Italian neighborhood, and I was the lone Irish Mic amoungst all the WOP's. The one thing we all had in common was, we all went to the same Catholic school, where the Nuns equally beat the crap out of all of us.
While the other kids dabbled in the model car hobby, Lump and I were fanatics. We spent every dime and spare second we had on models.
The Christmas of 64, I got my holly grail under the tree that year, The Big Drag, and Lump got the Big Tub. Later that year, I got the Big T, and Lump got the Big Rod. When I saw the Rod built, I knew I had to have one. For some reason, I never got one.
I do a lot of painting for a friend of mine, who dose nothing but 1/8th scale stuff. I made him a trade for some Rod Side Pipes and a six carb manifold. That's all I needed to build a Big Rod from the new T re-issue.
The only real problem I had was, the damd red kept bleeding into the yellow. I put 3 coats of sealer over the primer coats, but to no avail. The paint is actually a lemon yellow that matched the plastic of the original model. But it turned! Oh well, I can live with that. Red Plastic has always been a pregnant dog to cover.
I'm really happy to have this one in my collection, if only it wasn't so dall gone big!
