"Martian Spider 2" for Open Showrod Contest is in the works and coming right along......Stay tuned.... The chromed Allison is a build unto it's own....Nice snug fit into a cut down Lil' Gasser frame. I wanted some really heavy looking suspension to support the motor, the Lil' fit the bill... This will be the front half anyway. The back half will be much more involved.

That Allison is from an AMT Parts Pack. Once available in a small package by itself (and really pricey in this packaging at shows or on ebay), it was re-released with the contents of three other parts packs in a regular model-sized box by AMT about twelve years or so ago.

Yep, the chromed Allison is out of that reissued AMT kit like Scurvy says. I've been fiddling with tht thing for about 2 hrs almost, and it isn't done yet!! I have no freakin' idea how to wire and plumb it, although the instructions are real good at naming whats what, so I'll probably wing it. The original Martian Spider had a Sherman Tank engine I believe, (where the hell did Barris scrounge that?!), and not having one of those, this came in a close second. If any of you have ANY photos of the original Martian, please let me know. The only 2 I can find are the trading card pictures, the thing is a ghost. I tried contacting Barris, got an automated reply....PPPHHHHHTTTT! I'm still figuring out the details, but the front half will be the tractor pulling the cab behind. Looks like I will scratch the entire body. I'm thinking of adding some real interior lighting. I'd like to have a motor to open the body shell. Any ideas on how to do that guys? Something simple? I have a ton of small motors, just not sure on how to make it go up and down....Would need minimal gearing and space consumption, so may not work.

Tim,
As far as the mechanization of the body shell goes, I'd probably either run a geared-down motor to a bell crank so that it just constantly cycles up and down, or I'd use a very small R/C servo with a bell crank on the end to allow it to be posed up or down by reversing polarity to the servo.
As for a source for the body, I'd look at the Revell Gran Turismo buggy as one possible source (I think I have a partial if you'd like me to send it out) or maybe that pink Roth car with the Corvair motor out back - that'd be a good shape for a spider's abdomen, don't you think? You might also take a look in the toy department at the local drugstore - some of those cheap, off-brand toys have some cool shapes to play with.

Ralph!! Wow! thanks for the link to the Alllison! Yeesh! I don't think I'll be doing all the plumbing on it though! Great site at any rate! Thanks again! John-that is one of (2) pictures of the Spider I've ever seen, besides the 50 shots of it's current shoddy condition! I have written to Jay to see if he has more shots of it. I'm kind of hoping to see if I can get Jay to shed some light on the history of some of these cars. I know alot of them were in his museum about 20 years ago before it shut down. I surmise they went from Barris, after they had been shown, to Jay's museum, and then overseas. If you look at Jay's site, it has been updated. There are several pictures of some of the cars in a really nice museum. There is foreign writing on the display cards. (Look at the Wine Wgon, V8 Red Baron for example) Jay's site says he has build shots of many of the cars too, which will be posted in the future. I wonder if Jay is responsible for some of the construction of these cars? We all know Barris farmed out some of this stuff! Hopefully we'll get some insite on what has happened with these cars over the years. Scurvy, thanks for the input. I was thinking mini-servo, but not sure if it's worth all the trouble or expense. I have some microsized motors from toys, may try an easy/cheap route if I do it. I am definitely going to light it up with some LED's though. At this point, I am leaning towards completely scratching the body. I like the geometrical shape of the real Martian Spider. It almost looks like a coffin! It won't be the same, but similar. I'm sketching it out now.

Those are Richard Carroll tires. They didn't come from any model. They were mastered in the 70's by Richard, then offered thru Car Model Magazine as a promotional type item. Original sets sell for big bucks. Joe made a set of molds last year from one of my original sets and sold them here on the site. They are no longer available. Stay tuned for something similar in the future though.......
