I began work on this Bug Bomb a couple of weeks ago after getting inspiration from one on Dave Deal's pictures and the work of Rob, Ward, and Don. So far, it has turned out the way I expected and it has been a relatively easy mod. A few spare parts from the box and it just needs paint and assembly. Any ideas before it goes farther? ? Sorry guys, I haven't learned how to add a picture directly to the thread. Keith s137.photobucket.com/albums/q209/eggzilla1/?action=view¤t=vw_convertable.jpg

I like!!!
Keith, to add a photo, just make sure you have image 'tags' in front and behind your photo link. Try putting square-bracket "img" square bracket in front of your link, and square-bracket "/img" square-bracket after the link (oh, and don't use the quote marks that I have in the message). That'll do it!

I'll work on that and see if I can make it work on the next one. Thanks for the info. Keith

Glad to see that you're here, Keith, and posting pics! Whoo-hoo! Just so you know: I've been majorly inspired by your builds, and those of others ... both here and on Tres Wright's fan site for the Deal's Wheels series (and Snap Draggins, etc.) Great work ... as usual! Any chance of seeing some "before primer" pictures? I'm curious how you did the folding top, and pics like that would tell me a lot about it. (Maybe not everyone likes such shots, but I love 'em!) I will say, though, that seeing a Bug Bomb kit in primer makes me want Revell to re-release those Volkswagen kits, all the more. Besides just "out of box" builds, I'd love to see how one of them looks as a "Volks Rod": fenderless, with a chop top and Rat Rod style (flat black, usually) paint job. I bet that would look killer?! Sorry guys, I haven't learned how to add a picture directly to the thread. One trick to try is to use the "quote" button on each page (top right) to see how others did theirs. Pressing that will show the full, unedited "source code," so to speak. That's what I did, to figure it out. (I also use that button to parse where the home page is, on each person's photo-hosting place -- since sometimes an older link has decayed or died, but there are usually many other cool pics up at that person's site. Basically, if you paste a single photo's URL / address into the "address" part of your browser, move the cursor all the way to the right-most part of that address, and then use the backspace key to erase everything to the right of the last "/" in the addres, and hit enter or "go," that'll usually take you to the main "home page" part of that person's site. Which you can then bookmark, and check out any time you want. Seeing, in this case, Keith's chromed Super Spurt kit; and his cool red '57 Chebby!) Anyway, on each individual picture you post on PhotoBucket, there will be a little button thingie below it that is labeled "IMG code". Just click on that, and the web address will get copied to your computer's storage place for things you're cutting and pasting. (Clicking on that is like pressing Control-C ... which copies things to the clipboard.) Go to this site, and type up your message. Wherever you want the image to be, press Control-V and it should "paste" into the message. Then just press the "preview" button, and it'll show you how the post will look.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to keep you posted on the progress. In progress pictures are not my strong point Ward. I get in too much of a hurry to see what it's going to look like before I start snapping pics. You know........the rush of an idea coming together before your very eyes. Anyway, I thought it was ready for paint but, after looking at it more, I have a couple of things that need tidying up before I sling some paint on. I'll shoot for the weekend paint job. I do have another Bug Bomb mod on the table and think it will be coming together very soon too.
By the way Don, it looks like a Deal's Wheels kit because it is....LOL I'm only using Dave's art to do what Revel should have. At least I think they would have sold.
It seems I have 5 to 10 DW kits in various stages of assembly at any given time. My hold up is usually the chroming. It is my least favorite task to fill, sand, polish, drill, and mount to send to Bob to rechrome. I wait until I have no choice and then send it. So, Bob has a big order coming soon.

keith , what i meant to say is that your work is coming out so perfectly, it looks like it the convert was a real issued kit. i don't know if you plan on putting a driver in, but if you do, how about a girl caricature driver ? thats something dave never did !

I don't think I will chop the windshield on this one though I did consider it. I was in too much of a hurry to go through all the mods to do it. And Don, I was joking. I knew what you meant. I sometimes have a sense of humer dryer than a martini. ) I don't know about a girl in my Bug. I do plan to put a driver in but, I already have someone else in mind.. Shhhhhhhhh............It is a secret but, a cool one! Keith

Hey Tres, Thanks! I got some paint on the 'vert tonight. I used a lacquer and I'm not happy with the finish at all. It was nice and shiney when it went on and has dried to a dull semi-gloss finish. I guess a clear coat will work after I get the flames on it. The boot is primed. I think I'm still going withe dark blue top and interior. Oh, yeah, I added a "real" dash. The decals you made should work perfectly! The down side is the driver will likely obscure it. But, we all know it's there now. LOL Keith

I appreciate the compliment. Thank you. BAD NEWS: Okay, so I didn't like the paint job so much. I decided to hand buff it out and it was looking good.....then I decided to try the buffing wheel on the Dremel. As I picked up the Dremel I was thinking to myself, "You're going to actually do this and screw it up?" Well, to my surprise, it worked like a charm. The paint looked like it rolled out of the showroom. Then it happened. I went across the top of the windshield header and "plink", half of it broke and flew across the room. I didn't have anyone to blame but myself. Now it's in the shop for repairs again. Dang it! I sanded the paint down again because I knew it was going to take a repaint. I'll send pics and updates when I get a chance. Right now it's glue, sand, reglue, sand, fill, reglue, sand, fill.......................................................................................

and i'll bet you just sat there and stared at it for a while and wondered why you did it ,right ? thats what happened to me when i was working on my bug bomb. after a ton of body work, priming and painting, i had it looking sweet. i decided to test fit the tach, and even though i was thinking "i should do this over my bench," i had it in my lap. of course, it fell on the carpet, and a huge chunk broke off taking part of the roof, windsheild post and door. it literally shattered like an egg. it took a few days until i could bring myself to rebuilding it again.
i know your convert will be back and looking better than ever !

ARGH!! Sorry to hear that. It must be a "bad build" week, I was working on my Tirebird last night and the windshield will not fit against the roof properly. I tried to hot glue it and "flex" it up into place, but even after holding for several minutes the windshield flexed back down and popped loose when I let go. So I tried Testors cement and again it wouldn't hold. Then I tried epoxy and held it in place until my fingers ached, about 15 minutes (5 minute epoxy). I finally let go and the windshield flexed down AGAIN! So then I went to remove it and strings of epoxy got all over the visible part of the glass. RATS! I did manage to get it cleaned off before it cured and got the windshield polished back up again. That was an evening wasted, the glass STILL isn't in the body By the way, clearcoating may have brought it back. When I shot that HOK flip paint on the Z it looked as dull as could be, but the clearcoat went on really smoothly and really brought the colors out.

Hey Tres, I don't know how you would feel about doing this but, I have found when I am rebuilding these DW kits I usually have to grind the tops of the windshield from the roof to get them out. It makes them more flexible. If resort to this, use a marker and mark where you want to remove the clear plastic and cut a big ol' hole in the top of the clear plastic. It doesn't show anyway. That's the way I did the Baja on your site. Keith

Really Don, I didn't even get upset. In the back of my mind, I knew something would happen. But, it was going so well and that was honestly the last thing I was going to do before setting it down. The wheel caught the inside corner and it was all over after that. Yeah, you'll never know it when it's done but, I sure hate having to go thru this again. Keith

Wow. Beautiful build, sorry it got maimed, but you'll fix it I'm sure!! One trick: Use paint you don't have to polish if you don't want, but looks like it's dripping wet! LOL. HOK Kandy Oriental Blue over silver basecoat. NO CLEAR, OR POLISHING. I restored this little guy a few years ago. He's missing any exhaust, but would be easy to add. It's for sale by the way. ;D

I considered it until I got it fixed. Then I cracked it from the windshield to the patch in the hood where the tach used to be. Looks like this one is going to be more fun than I can stand! I may go to a back up and save this one for a rainy day!
