Well, I've been slowly hacking away with sheet plastruct, facricating the body slowly but surely. All of the main components are done, some are even glued together. I decided to hinge the upper body in the middle to swing up like a hatch. I used the simple brass hinges like Joe showed you. I shouldn't say "simple", because these things can be finicky. They have to line up properly, or your parts dont open correctly. I made them 3 times I think, until they worked right. They aren't great, but the best I can do. The upper hatch will swing up to reveal an eventual interior cockpit area, as well as these fuel and water cells I made from some stainless tubing. I polished them, then capped the ends with some old Chevy hubcaps!! LOL! They fit perfect! ;D (I think thats a chevy hubcap...) I have to add some inner supports for the body panels to sit on and make it fit better, but it isn't too bad..... I made this little "grille" from some scrap side trim in the parts box, and recessed it a few millimeters into the front end. I built a small support behind it. I still have to build a small box under the body for the axle supports to sit on. Here's that little "inspiration" photo someone asked about. It's the only trading card I managed to keep from childhood, and I just found it while rummaging thru some old stuff a few weeks back! wierd huh?

it probably too late now but you also could have used dollhouse hinges as well but the scratch building is coming along great there looks lie there is a lot of work there Well, I've been slowly hacking away with sheet plastruct, facricating the body slowly but surely. Thanks guys. Don, you weiner. LOL. You know better brother..... I'm still trying to think outside the box, which it is quickly becoming. (a box) I've been whacking a some bits and pieces of plastic trying them on it. (even a large spoiler-type thing) I can't decide if it's better as it is, or if it still needs something. I'm working on something different for the taillight area on the rear panel, to give it more depth. I like how the simple grillework looks. we'll just have to see what evolves I guess!

You know ( something from nothing ) ............................................unless I have a brain fart and missed something. oneyed

Yeh, as much of an "eye'baller" as I am, that just ain't cuttin' it with a geometrically shaped vehicle!!! Man, I hate math too....

Yeh, as much of an "eye'baller" as I am, that just ain't cuttin' it with a geometrically shaped vehicle!!! Yup: ain't that the truth! (That back-engineering things is a pain; especially with faceted or multiply-angled forms.) And if you're doing it from a single pic .... well, major points to you, scratch-bashing brother! I've done it a time or three; but generally on simpler things than you're wrestling with ... nevertheless, it's still a major pain. Make one bad assumption on even one of the angles, and everything else goes out the window with it!? We must be masochists!? (Then again, what kept me going on some of these "just keep going out of sheer stubbornness" type projects was the sense of "AAAHHHHHH! So THAT'S what's going on!" at the end of it all.) You're braver than I am, though: I try to work out only one side of the model, at first; and then copy it to both sides when all of the analytical work is done. (Assuming symmetrical forms sharing a common centerline.) The main bodywork of Dawie's BigShot showrod design is proving itself to be a deceptively simple-looking form, at first glance. Even after doing the "measuring and stuff" Paul joked about, and coming up with an initial attempt at both a 2D profile-view drawing and then a 3D practice piece from sheet plastic ... it's still going to take me another several rounds of that, I think, to nail it. I know the first physical mock-up has a long way to go .... s181.photobucket.com/albums/x42/Wardster_builds/Cartoon-Showrod-BigShot/It's totally off-topic here, but my three-foot-long build of the Dark Star spaceship taught me so much about the initial analytical end of things that it's not funny. (Try this whole bit of analyzing a faceted or angled surface ... except with compound curves on a nearly pure white surface, with little surface detailing casting shadows or reflecting light; that was usually seen against a black background, with all the attendant "washed out" pics resulting!?) Tim, I guess the short story here is to "Keep at it, man!" You'll enjoy knowing you got it absolutely right ... and great work so far! Oh, and thanks for those really nice hinge pics, too! Those rocked! (Is there a thread that talked about doing hinges?)

Sell out... next he'll be counting rivits and trying to mimic "scale hues".... That exchange cracked me up. You guys are too funny! ;D But having hung out with IPMS military guys once upon a time ... yup, I know just what you're talking about! Hey Tim ... where's the pilot's relief tube? It ain't an accurate replica until it has one!
