One of my model clubs had a fun little project in which one of the members brought in about a dozen or so airplane kits that he had collected over the years. They were passed out to whoever wanted one, with the instructions that they be built for showing off at the June meeting and be box stock -- no aftermarket stuff, no nothin' like that. I got a Monogram Fokker, and just 99% completed it tonight, when the meeting is tomorrow night. Left is maybe some paint touchup, and some thread rigging, although I might skip the thread part for now. It's a neat little kit. Also had its moments -- like painting the engine in detail, only to find out you can only see the top of it once everything is in place! The pilot I spent a lot of time on, but you don't see all of him either -- but at least you see more of him than you do the engine! And putting on the top wing, and all that's holding it up are those brackets ... yow. A few tense moments there. While I don't think any air historian builders have anything to fear from me, I think I did a better job on it than the one pictured on one of the Monogram boxes! Here's one presently on eBay: Nice change of pace ... now that that's done with, back to the cars!

At a family gathering someone asked what I was working on and I said "a Fokker" and the reaction I got -- well, gee, I thought that only happened in movies with a name like that! I love that skull & bones decal ... looks great on the plane but that would look great on a car as well!!!!!! At model shows that have all types, I really do like to look at the planes and ships, as they can be some of the best & best-looking models there. The very first model I ever built was an Air Force jet ... 2nd was a tractor that I got from Country Corn Flakes (I think) ... next were dinosaur skeletons from - Palmer? Pyro? - they've been reissued several times by others ... then the Allison Thunderland was my first car. I've got a "Blue Thunder" helicopter still in my stash, something I bought over 20 years ago and never put together. Its a Monogram kit, came out when the TV show was on that was based on the movie ... I'll have to get that together someday (in fact, one of the local model shows here is having a movie theme in September -- that would fit). Someone at this club gave me a tank kit to put together -- a model from Russia! You put the tank treads together piece by piece! But that will be a fun challenge someday to get together.

You know what? I think doing something completely different is really KooL!!! I love the plane Gwangi!!! I have won several best of show awards in the past, and the two I'm the proudest of are from the IPMS shows. I figure if I won BOS in them, competing with all the military, plane, figure, and ship modelers, that was an honor!!! I have looked at some of their work, and they are just as crazy as we are, but we are modelers just the same!!!

Thanks for the comments guys! Guess what? My plane came in at 3rd (out of 8 entrants) after the club did a secret ballot vote type of thing ... my prize? Another plane! But considering I was up against some more experienced military / air modelers, that's quite an honor!
