Well, I'll probably get my balls busted for this, but as an old-timer here, I am of a strong opinion that this place needs to get back to it's grass-roots, SHOWRODS. Don't get me wrong, I love ALL models of all kinds, but this is a site for showrods, and it's been seriously thin in the showrod department. Maybe it's the economy, maybe it's the weather, who knows. I am way-guilty myself, I haven't hardly built a model car in 3 years now! (Except for the LaramIE Stageghost I did for Curtis). My interests have changed in building, and since I started building to sell, there isn't much time. The contests have helped a bit I think, but I'd like to see more discussions about some of our old favorite showrods, more new designs from you guys as builders, the latest in new real showrods, etc; What do you guys think? I am in the process of photographing some of my older showrod builds, and I will be putting them in the completed projects section. Some you may have seen, some you may have not. I was thinking maybe it would generate some interest in these kits, manyof which have been reissued or are out there to find! Is it possible we have talked about everything there is to talk about the showrods from the 60's-70's? How about, we feature a vintage showrod each week, and have a discussion thread about it? That would be cool. I have a lot of old photos, and many in magazines I could photograph. What say you mates?

Geez, you go on about no showrods, and the picture post doesn't have one it. At least not that I could see.

Hey Tim I could not agree with You "more" about the "absence" of "SHOW RODS" here! I was really thinking this place was turning into another "M.C.F." I really like the"specialty" of the show rod theme here! Sorry to once more agree with You in that show rods are lacking here! While figures, spaceships and planes are "nice" this was a "show rod" site. And here again I agree that show rods it should "BE!!" Although , I "VERY MUCH" ENJOY LOOKING AT MR. JOHN TERESI BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF ART!!! ANYTIME, ANYPLACE . . . . . say, whatever happened to him? ? Thanks for opening this can of worms Tim Later Russ

tim, i agree 150,000 % with you. I made a similar post awhile back and got nothing but a good old bashing about it. as an old-timer as well, i agree that this site needs to get back to it's origins. all models are cool but this place is and always has been about the showrods.
and airdave...no, that is NOT a showrod.

I don't know.. have we beat the show rods to death? I know they are pretty much all I like to build, but my building is seasonal at best, especially this last year. I have things on the burners that I am excited about, but they are shelved.
I know our interests ebb and flow, and we all usually end up back here, but we have been in a bit of a slump. Is it better to just pull the plug? I know Paul and I are swamped and can't donate the time it would take to keep things like the Guest Gallery as active as I'd like to see it.. that was always a source of inspiration. The contests help, once we can get them hammered out... but part of me thinks that the re-issues of many grails have removed the thrill of the hunt and magic from collecting and building. I dunno... Just thinking out loud.
I'd like it (the board) and things to stay on topic, and I believe inspiration breeds inspiration, but I can't be much help at the moment, nor can I make anyone else build anything other than what they want to build... What is the answer?

Ball busting, Tim? Well, if we're all gonna be honest here and let it all hang out, I'll speak up. You might get yours busted, but I might get banned for this. Yes, this is a Showrod site. And we seemed to be OK with hotrods and drag stuff, kissing cousins so to speak, as they could also be seen in car shows. What I don't care for is the drift to what just the last contest was about. Zingers/Deals' Wheels/Roadrunner/Roger Rabbit/Elmer Fudd stuff. They're not cars, they're CARTOONS! I'm not denigrating anyone's work, I appreciate the paint and building skills involved. It's the subject matter that turns me off. Let's get back to CARS!

and airdave...no, that is NOT a showrod. bummer, with a capital NOT too! ...and yet it fits the description posted on the Main Page...odd? "True show cars were distinguished by being one-of-a-kind originals, built from the ground up. It seems a paradox that their engines were extremely powerful, yet they rarely touched the road."I think you guys are being a little too tough on the cars, the models and this site in general. I'm enjoying looking at all the fine "show" rods here.

l really totally agree with what Dave said sure l try to split my building between show rods and drag cars but always try to image that it can be built and driven this cartoon stuff doesn't do anything for me but that is just me it's seem that this place has turned into a chat room that hasn't nothing to do with show cars or the models maybe we should stick to the show cars

See now, the drag cars, stockers, and hot rods do nothing for me...
I know there is a gray area, and I'm not the be-all end-all authority, but I know a showrod when I see one, and honestly some people just don't, or they want to move the lines to include what they like. I don't agree 100% with dave's list, as some are just early hot rods with cool names, but that's the roots and how it started. I dunno...

and I can see the Deal's Wheels and Zinger's as unattractive to rational people. The Zingers were at least real 1:1 creations, and I just love the style Dave Deal drew in... are they show rods? I'd say the Zingers yes, because they were real, and the Deals... not.
But the show rod models, the ones this site was founded upon are a genre unto themselves.. and we all found common ground in appreciating that while the rest of the modeling community laughed and scorned. Now a Rommel's Rod just won at a major IPMS show.. try that in the late 1990s. Times have changed... for the better, I don't know.

What are these "Show Rods" you speak of, Tim? I, too, would love to see and discuss them more here. Admittedly I'm not helping by not building currently but I do like adding to the discussion where I can. There are obviously diverse interests represented here. My personal feeling is that show RODS implies cars. I personally don't care for the monsters, weird-os and macabre stuff, but I like the Zingers and cartoon cars. I have to agree that the Deals Wheels cars and TD Snap Draggins really aren't show rods - they're just exagerated. Don't really have any conclusions or answers. Just throwing out a couple thoughts. The one thing that seems to remain constant here is the definition of a "Showrod" . Some say it's open to interpretation, "Beauty is in.............." I would tend to disagree . This site is a "Showrod" site. PERIOD! End of story! That being said, I find myself imposing my own definition of a "Showrod" on myself ! In my mind, a very early 60's (Tognotie's "T", "Futurista", "Ala Carte", "Orange Crate", "Eliminator", "Manta Ray") to early 70's (Everything T.D.!)"Showrod" is just that. But wait, along with Barris, Casper, Cushenberry, Daniel, Jeffries, Roth & Scott come Bogosian, Deal, Denny, Reisner, Roth again & even T.D. with their "Cartoonish" Cars, Caricatures, Heavy Equipment, Locomotives, Planes & Semi's. Few of these, overall, were more than "renditions", drawings.................."Car-Toons" The Drag world has given us some outrageous "Showrods" ! Most all of Tommy Ivo's stuff. Most of Carl Casper's stuff. Most of Tony Nancy's stuff. The Jade Grenade, The Greere/Black/ Prudhome, The California Charger, The Little Red Wagon, The L.A. Dart. The LSR guys, the Bluebird, Attempt 1, Challenger 1, The Spirit of America, The So Cal Belly Tank. Are ya paying attention kids? This is all PRE rear engine T.F. cars. A time when Showmanship & Craftsmanship where what it was all about ;D! Ford gave us the "Futura" (Turned into the Batmobile by Jeffries/Barris.). Lincoln/Mercury, the Green Hornet by Jeffries. G.M. the CERV 1, 2 & 3. AMT the AMTronics. A glimpse into the future that never was . Turbines to speed! Flux Capacitor to the future! Hmmm??? There's a good example right there . It's also what brings me to this point. For me, it's not all that tough to draw the line. The Batmobile is Definitely a "Showrod"! The "Back to the Future DeLorean" NOT! To that end, I spent some time a while back trying to think "what if". What if T.D. were creating "Showrods" today. If you follow the "formula", he was heavily modifying 30's & 40's vehicles in the late 60's to mid 70's, roughly 30 years older than present day. Therefore, 2010 minus 30 years would put us in 1980 !!! (Is anybody else throwing up???) ;D ;D ;D! Respectfully, I have a hard time believing "modern interpretations" would play well (The Taurus Wagon based Rommel's Rod sticks in my brain like an ice pick [No offense to the builder]). Brandon was/is the most insane grail killer on the planet and, IMHO, the quintessential innovator of "NEW" showrods. (The guy's AMAZING!!!) Keep in mind, his stuff is based on bona fide "Showrod" kits........SUPER-SIZED ;D ;D ;D!!! Aspiring to attain the level of detail & perfection of John Teresi (and YA!, Where did he go???) is certainly noble. Hobby Bobby's machined wheels and custom tires are the bomb and his hand fabrication of everything is second to none! At the same time, I think one can go too far. Again, IMHO, box art or your interpretation of box art is far enough. Use every skill you have or have learned here to build the best "Showrods" you can. Practice or attempt applying these skills on Nascrap, T.V. cars, Speed Racer's Mach Five, a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, a Big Frankie, a Seaview or J-2, then apply it to a "SHOWROD"!!! If you stray into "engineering" suspensions, linkages and plumbing, you've probably taken the "fun" out of it . One might as well get out in the garage and build a 1:1 at that point, ala Fritz, Mark or Plowboy. Have we beat "Showrods" to death? I certainly don't think so! Is my definition of a "Showrod" different than your's, Probably. My point is, this is Dave's Show Rod Rally! There are 275 kits on the "Alpha List" and if 500+ "Members" can't come up with 10,000+ interpretations of those, then maybe all is lost! Say it isn't so!!! Hone your skills elsewhere. Build a SHOWROD here!!! "Paulie"

Interesting topic and good points. A lot of you who know me , are aware that I rarely build the themed type showrods and in fact it's been YEARS since I did any. I think the last one was TD's Fast Buck. I am guilty of showing 50's and 60's kustoms here. I guess I figured it was no different than showing a Rat Fink figure as back in the day when these "showrods" were presented on the circuit, they were accompanied by kustoms and hot rods , even some drag cars....they are somewhat "family" in my opinion. But I do agree......let's keep it ALL showrods here! If you have visited my forum "Traditional Rod and Kustom in scale", then you know ANYTHING that doesn't fit the guidelines is deleted and yes it's pretty heavily moderated for "content" so that it remains on topic at all times. Very little slips by. I think that's what it takes if you want this site to remain SHOW RODS only.......you need moderation of content. Talking about it and ranting won't help.....there are people who won't read this thread and the stuff will continue to get posted. I don't have time to look at everyone's builds here, but I can't count how many times I have clicked on something to find a RAT ROD and sorry....but I just can't stand the majority of them. They aren't show rods....period. I will do my part and keep the kustoms and rods away. The types listed on this site as being show rods that I would build are the likes of Black Widow, Green Hornet, Red Chariot and even some Roth stuff etc.. I might stray to something else like a Cosma Ray.....if I ever come across one. So from one guy who almost always builds outside the topic.....PLEASE moderate and remove all the OFF TOPIC models. I know it will tick some people off....but let them cry, they will get over it and most will embrace it. There are plenty of other sites out there with "general interest".

As unfortunate as it may be, I can see it may come down to just that. I have always looked at what a Show Rod is by viewing the Alfa List. Every time a member post and asks the Question about "What is a Show Rod" some one points them to the list. Nothing ever changes though. The member who asked posts a (lets say) 90's Camaro or something. They continue to do so even after they have asked. I think it is time to CUT THE FAT. RodBurNeR seams to be right. I do the same to my site. If you post something not automotive related it gets dumped. modelcitizen You are so right. You take the fun out of building going to far. At least if I try to go to far it gets to be more like work. But to a select few it may be what they love. I like to see the work they have done and the new ideas. But I would never attempt to do it myself as it would no longer be fun for me. And as you said, "If you stray into "engineering" suspensions, linkages and plumbing, you've probably taken the "fun" out of it . One might as well get out in the garage and build a 1:1 at that point". Just my opinion guys. Dont shoot me. Brandon I am sure there are a couple guys here that will help if you need us. Interesting, I was thinking the same thing recently. Now the question becomes, what is a showrod? I posted a 49 merc, is that a show rod? If not, why not? Are we talking showrod as in kit designed to be showrods (Tom Daniel, Roth, AMT's Lil series, etc)? Does that exclude Roth's monsters? What's the criteria? I'm all in no matter what we (you) decide. But I agree, less other stuff and more showrods and goofy stuff. That's what appeals to me about this site.

I agree with ira, everyone post the last showrod that they built. It's been a long time since i built a showrod (or any model for that matter). When my son wyatt passed away on August 19, 2010, i kind of lost interest in models all together. so it's been almost 1 year since i've even touched a model. It has been well over a year since i built this. it's a T.D. Ice T, with 36 ford fenders, a 39 ford chassis, a parts pack Pontiac 421 engine, parts box wheels and tires, stock iceT seat, boothill express rear floor, and a 32 ford coupe dash, 39 ford grill, 41 willys hood peak and 41 willys headlights. Jay did the majority of the body work on this one, and passed it on to me to smooth out and finish up.
