I've been hunting and collecting bits and pieces for years to finish these , and recently I decided to sit down and do an inventory to see what I still needed . Turns out I didn't need anything , I had everything needed to put all five Thunderbugs together again ! I left all of the stickers and paint just like they were when I found them , just like some kid had built them years ago ! I still have one yellow body and a few parts left so I'm planning another customized one to go with my primered Herbie . So here they are . . . The "Fabulous Thunder Bugs" !

Bob that is a great line up. I think you made the right decision on paint and decals. Of course they compliment your custom very well. Two thumbs up with a twist!

Thanks guys , I'm glad that you like them ! Those are great! I love that you left the original build stuff intact... I didn't have the heart to remove the stickers and strip the paint , I'm sure some kids built them and were really proud of them ! Did you notice the yellow Bug was left plain ? I wonder what he was thinking ?

I wonder what he was thinking ? I have the same issue, I get very nostalgic about it, thinking some kid who is likely my age now , built it and was so happy with the way it came out, much like I did with my builds. Its like Toy Story 3 - at one point did that Bug go from a kids proud build to something to get rid of ? Did he grow up and I still haven't ?

I left the decals and paint on my last bath tub show rod.. the paint wasn't that great, but it wasn't bad either, and they were the original decals... I thought it was cool somebody had tried to do a really nice job and it seemed like a shame to strip it all off and paint the stuff porcelain white... so I left it and built the rest of the car around it. it's kind of neat to retain some of that energy... of course I like old cars and stuff like that, too.. some things just have soul and they've earned it.

Sounds like we all feel the same way . There's something about finding a model that was built 45+ years ago and somebody obviously put a lot of effort into it . It may not be up to today's standards but it was once proudly displayed on someones dresser and sometimes it's better to just leave them the way they were .

There are a few things I noticed on some if them that I would like to fix (that skyward left taillight) or improve, but the various sticker placements and the different things that are painted on them make for a great display. I really like the white wheels and spike on the orange one.
And I honestly had never thought about putting stickers or decals on the bases (!!!)

I wonder why Monogram never reissue these kits , snaps are fun to build!. I like your Thunder bugs ..... Just like any kit it helps if they hear from us ! We've had an email campaign going on for a while over on the Car-Toons Board , and Revell has been listening . We've been getting positive replies back from them and that just encourages us to keep emailing them ! Join us and let them know that you want the Tom Daniel Snappers reissued , especially the originals which we haven't seen since the 70's ! Email them at : cservice@revell.com

Maybe things have changed . Here is one of the latest replies I've recieved from Revell , I was asking specifically about the Thunder Bug . ---- cservice <cservice@revell.com> wrote: > Hi Bob, > We get many requests for the TD model. You would think this would be a no brainer at Revell . You have the molds, you have all the artwork already , and the kits look great and don't have a ton of parts. In an age where getting kids to spend anytime building a kit is near impossible , reissuing a simple kit that would attract a young kid and maybe get him into the hobby seems like a win-win for them. instead of being overwhelmed by yet another Dale Jr. Nascar kit with hundreds of parts , a kid could spend an hour and have a finished product on his shelf, and who knows, the next time he's at the hobby store he might pick up another kit !

Just found this junk lot on Ebay , apparently there is another color Thunderbug ! This one is olive green ; its next to a lime green Vette so you can really see the difference . Sorry I don't know how to put a shortcut in, but its auction # 222047134017

Thanks Todd ! And thank you Don for finding this one ! It's definitely an oddball color for any Tom Daniel model , I can't think of any reason to have molded it in that color ! I'll have to ask around a bit and see if anybody knows about it . I don't think I've seen an orange Boss Mustang before either , but I'm sure they exist .

According to Tom Daniel the odd color was the result of mixing all of the leftover colored pellets in the "bottom of the barrels" into one barrel . During the Arab Oil Embargo of the 70's there was a shortage of the plastic pellets used to mold kits , so Monogram (and others) did this to finish production runs of many kits . Not a big deal when producing white models but for those molded in colored plastic it resulted in some strange colors .

That could explain another kit I have, its a Lindberg "Time Bomb' 32 Ford which I built around 1974 . Now this kit has ben reused with many names over the years , but all the Time Bombs I've ever seen ( and other Lindberg kits) were a very bright yellow . The one I have is a very dark mustard . I've never seen another one this color ,and now I think I know why- Thanks for the info !

I like them! Leaving them pretty much as built is a great idea, kind of your tribute to some kid years ago having a blast with them! Be nice to see them reissued.
Revell U.S. is owned by Hobbico (think Tower Hobbies ) E mail responses seem to run hot or cold depending on who answers the e mail that day. Paul

I've heard stories about a plastic shortage before so mixing leftovers kinda makes sense . If you've ever mixed poster paints (thick solid colors) it's easy to end up with some pretty yucky colors !

Revell /Monogram wasn't at the past two NYC toy Fairs so I've not had the opportunity to talk with them for a few years, but generally got favorable responses from them. Last thing was I had 25 Revell truck Steppes Wreckers ($140.00 kit) in my store with bad chrome on all the trees. Ed replaces all 125 sprues. I have faith in them to listen. Paul
