It's going great! We finally got the Roach launched for print today. Delivery will be on the 19th. In the meantime I'm going to get the bubble windshield dialed and get that one printed in the next day or so. Images shown are from the Shapeway's stat page which has the dimensions.

Congrats guys !! I don't think this could have turned out better - great job - have you decided to cast these, or simply offer them 3D printed with a separate bubble and let the buyer do the vaccuforming ? I'll buy it either way

How is any of this coming along? So we made some adjustments to the crown of the helmet area. Its very subtle, but until you see and hold something in your hand you can make those decisions. Also that small detail that is on the back end of the helmet.....looks like a stinger shape maybe got just a bit thicker. So that's latest on the Roach. This final version will get smoothed out. Mike

Im surprised HobbBobby hasnt chimed in on this yet! Well... ... I find it absolutely unbelievable, that soon, a solid model will be available and then, even in different sizes, WOW! Congratulations to this fantastic work and effort, I take my hat off! But... ... I still do not know, when and at what price... And... ... what I've always wondered... ... how it is about the rights on this thing? I do not want to be a spoilsport, but is that all clarified? I mean, first the intellectual property of Ed Newton, then the construction of the real car of Dan Woods and Don Boeke, or Stan Peterson, or whoever it is? Do not get me wrong... ... I want this thing and also in different sizes, yes! But, if I build it myself, just for myself, I think it's different, than duplicating it, then marketing it and selling it... Or, I am wrong? Hmm...

But, if I build it myself, just for myself, I think it's different, than duplicating it, then marketing it and selling it... Or, I am wrong? Hmm... It's an interesting point. I work for a large multi-national company who sells things online (who you've all probably heard of) dealing with business development. Part of that is finding successful products and if my company doesn't sell something like it, coming up with a version that's close as possible without infringing on their trademark/IP/copyright. Using someone's brand name to sell them would be a big no-no - so making a Barris body in 1:1 that copies his design and selling to the same market with "Official Barris Product" in the name would be cause for legal headaches. Rightfully so. However, I think where a almost all of the model parts companies get left alone with this stuff is that: A) Ford (for example) doesn't sell model car parts so there's no room for confusion. It's not like someone could accidentally buy your part and think it was from the original manufacturer because it clearly isn't 1:1, is a fraction of the size and wouldn't work on their products, even if it DOES look like it. You're not losing them any sales. B) Replicas and Miniatures Co (again, for example) doesn't say that any of their parts, say their 32 Ford-style resin parts. are licenced by Ford or made to fit a 1:1 Ford. C) There's no huge stacks of money to be made from it anyway. An IP owner can say "please stop selling that, I don't like it" and the polite thing to do is to stop so they don't have to threaten legal proceedings. In fact, the legal process in most countries dictates that if you think someone's infringing on your IP then the first thing you have to do is give the person selling it a chance to stop selling it, thus resolving the problem. Plus, low quanties make this even less of an issue. If you made a million dollars selling model car parts somoene's ears might perk up, but 5 or 10? Most bedroom resin casters are making more than that and even if you had a rock-solid case (which would be hard to put together) to take to court it wouldn't be worth it to pursue. A good comparison here is aftermarket spare parts for your 1:1 daily driver. Most people probably have a car that has some sort of non-OEM part on it. Nothing illegal about someone making a 09 Focus wing mirror that looks and fits just like the real one, even though Ford designed it. There's always some difference. In the case of model car parts relating to a 1:1 design there's so many differences (size, material, branding, application) that making a scale replica that looks like an existing showcar isn't going to cause anyone any legal problems I wouldn't think. All that said, I'm not a lawyer, but I'm glad those kits are out there and I'll be picking up one of everything Mike and his brother put out in 1:25.

Great points from you guys! It comes down to getting legal advise and following it. I'll say this I've made around twenty wheel designs all based on the real wheel pattern. I have avoided putting any brand name on them if they had it. No wheel company has asked me to stop making them. Granted these are not on the shelves of Target or Walmart. Just like the Stiletto and Roach Coach I'm just not sure if there is enough volume of product being sold to justify a lawyer coming after profits!
I started this whole 3d print stuff because I wanted the wheels for my own personal models. I then said maybe someone else is thinking the same thing. Sure enough many people have bought and continue to buy my 1:8 scale wheels because there just is not much variety on the market for that scale. Soon after making wheels I said to myself what about a body and here we are sitting on a couple of never seen models. James was the one that ignited me to make the "T" body and it led to the Roach and Stiletto. I found the challenge to make them as a curious adventure. That's it. They may or may not sell. They are done and I have been absent from the board as I have been busy working on some other bodies.
Hows that for a summary. To sum it up I need to seek true legal advise to cover my end. Once I do that I'll let you all know.
Appreciate the effort put in this!
Mike

l cannot believe you guys are talking about this you guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill totally agree with kabdriver this not going to be world domination just one guy making some great showrods l really don't think you have that much to worry about if that was the case 95% of resin casters would be in jail
