And Mysterion those are some of the gray area kits Dave bought and felt were not regular automobiles, but ones designed in the spirit of showrods. I know the Son of Ford is a TD design and that's why he chose to include it. Like I said before, I agree with about 90% of the 275. I don't think we need to split hairs or go on a witch hunt but if a car like the Beer Wagon doesnt strike somebody as a showrod, or if they can't look at the Bad Medicine or the Bed Buggy and know why it is too, then they need to go back and soak up some gallery pages.
Like I said you should just know one when you see it. And Ultimately Dave created this page to look at his collection while on the road because he travels extensively. We have just grown around it. Is he the be-all, end all authority? No... Are some, like the Son of Ford as much of a showrod as the Beer Wagon? No.. Are we going to change anything? Nope.... It is what it is... It's worked for over a decade. I'm good with that. Relax and have fun.

1st, let me apologize to Brandon for leaving this all in his lap. Meh, don't worry about it.... it was fun and probably overdue, again. LOL. We will see how the OT board does, it's for models only, not discussion topics...

Funny about the NNLs.. I've had many of these at the west coast NNLs, and something that I brought usually made the magazines, and I had a bunch of good feedback, (and usually got to hang out with Ira, Scurvy, Flounder, Alan, etc...)
Atlanta? Sheesh... way different vibe. Holy cow. One guy actually commented in a serious tone to his buddy that the blade on my Show Plow dump truck "wouldn't be very effective." LOL... It's not supposed to push anything but trophies and angel hair... Hehehe...

Well I like the general common ground vibe we have, and had... I don't want to go around policing things like a czar, nor do I really want to frequent a place that can delete stuff on a whim.. ultimately, I would see that as a bad thing. I think an OT area would be a great help. I like Tim's spaceships and the work that goes in to them. I like Rob's drag cars, and Fred's halloween stuff, and Flounder's insanely engineered cars and things... Do they fit the showrod theme? No. Are these guys friends of mine that have other interests? Yes. Am I going to see that stuff anywhere else? No. This is the only model board I frequent. If it wasn't for this place, I probably wouldn't build models. I am not interested in anything else other than making new showrods, and helping to keep the legacy and spirit of the original ones alive... I would hope you guys, especially after these five pages, maybe understand the common good of the site, and take it upon yourself to contribute in a positive manner, instead of having Paul and I nanny you over which cars are acceptable... I'm a grown man, I have no interest in policing a website for invalid content. You guys are all grown, and have gravitated here with an interest in showrods... do your part. It's really not that hard, nor is that suggestion/request "ignoring the problem." I really don't see what is so hard to understand.... Brandon, I'll have more time after work, I'll explain it better then. Bill Fair enough, but know that I aint mad atcha, and think your question was a valid one.

When I get home, maybe I will dig this out.... I had made a little more progress on it after starting with a gluebomb, but then stalled when I picked up a MIB version. I have to undo-some of what has been done and transfer it to the new hull...

I have created a monster with this thread...... Good civil debate is good. And we have widened the scope of this BB....but things grow and change. The fact we needed a small redirect to the original purpose of this BB is good. But I think we can widen our scope a little too. It's a good thing Tim! Dave, sometimes I wish this place had the "like" button like facebook.

Maybe this HAS just become a chat room full of collectors who don't want to/ no longer build showrods. Maybe the time spent on this board has become an acceptable activity in lieu of building, while still being able to be called a "modeler." Maybe we should pull the plug on the board and folks would have nowhere to chat and they'd go back to the bench with their newfound gobs of free time. Maybe we should only open it up once a month for discussions so people can build and not lounge around online... LOL. I'm joking... but it crossed my mind.

I am not interested in deleting content or policing content. I would hope you guys would just handle that yourselves. Well there went 5 pages of toilet paper! Let the inmates run the asylum... That's how we reached this point in the first place! Hmmm... Realize problem... Debate problem... Do nothing...
Problem solved... Problem solved... Problem solved... Problem Ignored! I love it when a plan comes together! The truth shall set you free... Unless I miss my guess, My truth will soon be found in the cornfield! Well I like the general common ground vibe we have, and had... I am not interested in deleting content or policing content. I would hope you guys would just handle that yourselves. That being said, I'm not against an OT area, as I don't mind looking at stuff on occasion, and those that don't want to view that stuff do not have to look. However, I would hope the focus would stay on the subject of showrods.
I know a showrod when I see one. I'm not going to try and explain it, but they have their own energy, and as much as I hate to say it, if you really have to ask, you might not understand....
I don't agree 100% with Dave's list, but there is about 90% of stuff that is on the money, and if you can't roll through them and understand what is or isn't... I dunno. Maybe folks should really take some time and really read the list entries and their contents. Absorb the information. I will say that most have a theme of some sort, such as a hot rodded vehicle that is not usually, like the garbage truck... a show version, with style....
Really take a minute and click from one page to the next, or even the contest pages... you will see and understand more than just reading other's attempts at interpretations. I think it's really quite clear, in a simple poetic sense. Like I said, I know one when I see one....

and I can see the Deal's Wheels and Zinger's as unattractive to rational people. The Zingers were at least real 1:1 creations, and I just love the style Dave Deal drew in... are they show rods? I'd say the Zingers yes, because they were real, and the Deals... not.
But the show rod models, the ones this site was founded upon are a genre unto themselves.. and we all found common ground in appreciating that while the rest of the modeling community laughed and scorned. Now a Rommel's Rod just won at a major IPMS show.. try that in the late 1990s. Times have changed... for the better, I don't know.

See now, the drag cars, stockers, and hot rods do nothing for me...
I know there is a gray area, and I'm not the be-all end-all authority, but I know a showrod when I see one, and honestly some people just don't, or they want to move the lines to include what they like. I don't agree 100% with dave's list, as some are just early hot rods with cool names, but that's the roots and how it started. I dunno...

I don't know.. have we beat the show rods to death? I know they are pretty much all I like to build, but my building is seasonal at best, especially this last year. I have things on the burners that I am excited about, but they are shelved.
I know our interests ebb and flow, and we all usually end up back here, but we have been in a bit of a slump. Is it better to just pull the plug? I know Paul and I are swamped and can't donate the time it would take to keep things like the Guest Gallery as active as I'd like to see it.. that was always a source of inspiration. The contests help, once we can get them hammered out... but part of me thinks that the re-issues of many grails have removed the thrill of the hunt and magic from collecting and building. I dunno... Just thinking out loud.
I'd like it (the board) and things to stay on topic, and I believe inspiration breeds inspiration, but I can't be much help at the moment, nor can I make anyone else build anything other than what they want to build... What is the answer?

I'm in Chicago.. well, Joliet. for the Goodguys show... People's Choice is a great idea.... I like to see the unfinished builds, but based on this size of a contest, let's not include them in the voting.... maybe if you want vote on your favorite unfinished vote with your others and we'll pick one unfinished. (?) I'd be cool with that, though obviously the goal is to finish them. (Don't want everybody getting lazy, lol)

I know, and generally I'm against it.... but these are supposed to be about fun, and it is summer time, most of our building tapers off in the warmer months... and this isn't a major one like our TD or Cobweb Classic, IMHO... I'm just hoping to inspire a few guys to get their stuff off the bench.
I know it's nearly impossible for me to finish anything in the summer...

I would say it is T-based, or T era, anyways... if you really had to look at it from a "production" standpoint... It fits within the era of C-cabs and Model Ts in the shape, open sided, no-doors style, and cowl area... 1920s time frame if it had been a stock piece.

Worst bike wreck I had.... I was in 3rd or 4th grade and was going down a hill with no hands, acting cool and hauling buttt... I ran over a pot hole in the road, and all I remember was watching my handlebars spin around and around with a screeching, burnout sound... roowrowororrowor... and off I went.
I put my hand out and my left hand was pushed off my arm bones downward at almost a 90degree angle, and wouldn't go back.. it was just bent at an awkward angle... I freaked out because I thought it was going to be like that forever... I shattered the growth plates in my wrist and fractured one of my arm bones and was in a cast for the rest of the summer...
Broke that arm one more time falling out of an apple tree and landing on it, and the other one once after my brother nailed the floor of his tree house to the BOTTOM of the rails "so the nails and tools wouldn't fail off" as he was hammering.. he had it all figured out. I went up there to check it out and heard a small sound and was like "What was that?" and all of a sudden I was flushed down like a toilet and landed on my arm again amongst a pile of boards, nails and tools... I knew it was broke as soon as I landed.
And was stunk was it happened about a week before we took a school trip to the beach and I had to tape my arm up in a trash bag to play in the ocean...

I don't understand all the love for the badman, it is a nice kit, but it's just a 55 chevy racer and there are so many 55 to 57 kits available, what am I missing. I'm not sure what the attraction is to the Badman either.... I mean the black '55 with the flames is the same kit with different wheels... but I feel it. When I was a kid I got the badman '55 as a Christmas present at my grandmothers and it was dynamic: the wheels, the slicks, the decals, the box art, the roll bar, the clear hood scoop and front spoiler, and the ladder bars and the description paragraph on the instructions. It was wild. I truly believed I was building the baddest drag car on the planet and it was a wheelie poppin' monster, capable of winning with an attitude, and the other guys were gonna be scared of it, and in the end: Adios Mother! there they went.... the BADMAN!!! ;D ;D ;D I think for me, it has more to do with the essence and emotions of the kit rather than the fact that it's just a '55 with fancy decals. I had more of an attachment to it and it seared my brain. Look at this picture: Then read the paragraph with an excited kid's brain: Then look at it going away, knowing the "mother" part seemed edgy and taboo..

Great builds guys! I think that I made the ugliest zinger ever...LOL. I just wanted to be part of this Shin-dig. ;D With multiple engines, you know I like it! ;D They are all really cool! The Viper, wow! and the shoebox Ford.. great idea! Ira's truck, the trans Um and the Chevelle are above and beyond... The '57 was my very first Deal wheels, I was a '57 Chevy nut as a kid, and they always make me smile... Great job so far! We'll leave the threads open... finish whatcha got and post it!
